The Alpine Marmot Project

Welcome to the Alpine Marmot Project

An introduction to the Alpine Marmot Project

This joker of the Alps has a serious message for the world.

For over twenty years, researchers from the University Claude Bernard – Lyon1 have studied marmots living in the French Alps in La Grande Sassière nature reserve in the Savoy region. Here in this stunning national park, evolutionary biologists have identified and tracked developments among marmot family groups in twenty six separate territories.

On this site you can learn more about marmots and the ways in which changes in their population in the Alps signal the potential effects of global warming on species evolution.
